This antique jug is a particularly rare find with its unique abstract hand painted design. It features the floral and stripe motif and pinched spout that is symbolic of the Puglia region. Dating back to the early 1800s, the hand-thrown ceramic pitcher was used to hold wine at mealtimes. The traditional ‘righe e stelle’ design is particular to Grottaglie, a town famed for its age-old ceramic craft, where circles are combined to create rosettes or star formations. Since the 1800s the flowers were made with stencils, originally cut from sponges. What sets this jug apart from other traditional pitchers is its particular form and ‘squared-off’ handle, as well as the sea blue flower petals with ochre brown centre (usually the flowers were all hand painted in blue). It also features that well-loved patina brought about authentically from years of daily use and the passing of time. Today, this charming pitcher could be used as a vase for fresh flowers or as a decorative display piece adding some country charm to any home or space.
