Small Antique Confit Pot with Drip Glaze

€90.00
Sold

This small antique confit pot dating back to the early 1900s was originally used for preserving a family’s most valued food such as anchovies, sardines, figs, eggplants, artichokes or olives in olive oil. Originating from the town of Grottaglie in Puglia, (known for its age old ceramic craft) it represents the finest and most expensive kind of this domestic, ‘ceramica rustica’. With its ivory-coloured glaze known as ‘robba bianca’, it is produced with a pewter glaze and twice fired. The small proportions of this confit pot make it a rare find as does the magical patina from years of daily use, and the dazzling mustard glaze ‘splatters’. This ‘drip glaze’ was an error during the firing process when the yellow glaze pottery (known as ‘robba gialla’) nearby would have splattered on to the ‘robba bianca’ pieces. This gives the pot a charming individuality, setting it apart from other confit pots. This ‘vasettu’ would make an ideal storage vessel or decorative display piece injecting some country charm to any home or space, particularly when pared with the matching ceramics as seen in the images.

Found in Ostuni

the charming hilltop town of the valle d’Itria known as the la città bianca (or ‘white city’).

Dimensions: H13.5cm x W17cm x D11.5cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
