Small Antique Deep Green Splatter Passata Bowl
Passata Bowls, also known as 'limmi,' originate from Puglia and they take the form of rustic handmade clay or terracotta bowls. This historic hand thrown example from the early 1900s was originally used to make tomato passata or to wash fruit and vegetables. What sets this passata bowl apart from others is the very unique pistachio green splatter glaze interior over a creamy-hued base. Along with this, its smaller size makes this piece very collectable, as limmi were usually made in larger dimensions. The mesmerising splatter effect was added to keep insects and flies away from the passata or food. This surface application of the Pugliese limmi was spontaneously created by hand, meaning each is a unique piece with its own characterful pattern. The antique bowl has aged beautifully with its own particular patina, and the external clay unglazed and on display.
