Tall Antique Green Marbled Jar with Lid
Antique hand thrown ceramic jar with an all-over marble glaze, known as a ‘vasettu smarmriatu cu lu cuperchiu’ in local dialect. Originating from Grottaglie, the small town in Puglia renowned for its age-old ceramic tradition, this version represents the most prized of the vasetti or lidded jars. The striking style of surface decoration utilises copper and iron oxide which was usually reserved for details on ceramics due to its prohibitively high cost. The unique marble glaze in vivid green is a particularly rare find (as well as coming with its intact lid), as they were commonly glazed in an ochre brown marbled effect or twice glazed in plain ivory. These marbled jars were traditionally used for preserving foods such as marmalades, quince cheese or paste (a local delicacy), biscuits, pumpkin seeds and roasted chickpeas.
