This extra-large antique pot originating from the southern Italian region of Puglia is a rare example of vessels used to hold olives in brine. Dating back to the mid-1800s, the farmhouse pot called ‘cammauttu’ in local dialect, features a partial yellow glaze around the top opening and handles so that spills and drips could be wiped clean. Rather than decorative, half glazes were a more economical option than glazing the entire pot. The 4 handles were added so that the vessel could be easily transported or moved, and to empty its contents by tipping it over. The rustic pot has that magical patina that can only be brought about authentically by daily use and the passing of time. This hand thrown piece is a unique historic example of domestic southern Italian pottery, and is the perfect vessel to add an accent to any home or garden. Create a charming moment when pared with the green glazed 4-handle pot as seen in the images.
