Passata Bowls, also known as 'limmi,' originate from Puglia and they take the form of rustic, robust bowls. This large passata bowl dates back to the late 1800s from the southern Italian region of Puglia and was originally used to make tomato passata or to wash fruit and vegetables. The rustic bowl features a charming, glazed interior of splattered pesto-hued green over a creamy base. This splatter effect was added to keep insects and flies away from the passata or food. This surface application of the Pugliese limmi was created by hand, meaning each is a unique piece with its own characterful pattern. The large bowl has aged beautifully with that authentic, magical patina from years of daily use, with the external clay unglazed and on display. The hand thrown bowl features a drainage hole at the bottom, as well as metal staples on the back, as seen in the images. Before the availability of adhesives, pottery was repaired using this traditional method. These domestic pieces of pottery were considered valuable pieces to the family, and would be repaired rather than thrown away. The antique vessel would be perfect to add some country charm to any kitchen or table setting, or could also be used as a wash basin (as the drainage hole exists).

Found in Lecce

the baroque jewel and capital of the Salento.

Dimensions: H24.5cm x W46cm x D46cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
