A very rare antique apothecary jug with an elegant form and wonderfully hand painted design. This hand-thrown pitcher-shaped vessel dating back to the mid 1800s was most likely used in a pharmacy to hold medicinal preparations and concoctions. The unique extra large ceramic jug features a serpent-like handle, a pinched spout and a strikingly hand painted fern design (with a bird-like resemblance) in ink blue set against the creamy white glaze, characteristic of pottery from Faenza, Italy. This one-of-a-kind piece has that magical patina that can only be brought about genuinely by daily use and the passing of time.
