XL Antique Hand-Painted Apothecary Jug – Faenza, Italy

€280.00

A rare and unusually large antique Italian apothecary jug dating to the mid-18th century. Hand thrown and originally used in a pharmacy to hold medicinal preparations and concoctions, this distinctive ceramic vessel has an elegant pitcher-like form, a pinched spout and a characteristic serpent-shaped handle.

The extra-large jug is decorated with a striking hand-painted fern motif, with a bird-like quality, in ink blue against a creamy white glaze. The form, decoration and glaze are characteristic of pottery from Faenza, one of Italy's historic centres of ceramic production.

Its beautifully aged surface has developed an authentic patina through years of use and the passage of time, giving this one-of-a-kind piece the character and individuality of antique Italian pottery.

Today, it makes an impressive decorative object or vase, bringing an understated sense of historic Italian charm to a contemporary interior. For use with fresh flowers, we recommend placing a separate watertight vessel or small glass vials inside.
