XL Antique Olive Green Glaze Amphora

€950.00

A remarkable amphora with extra large proportions, beautifully hand crafted form and a luminous olive green glaze that really makes it a stand out piece. This striking vessel used to store wine, dates back to the late 1700s and originates from the southern Italian region of Calabria. What makes this antique amphora particularly unique is the olive green half glaze on the top half of the vessel giving way to the raw clay, along with the drips from the green glaze running down the main body of the vessel. The charming amphora features handles with the potter’s thumb prints at the base, and there is a hole at the bottom where a wood stopper would have been placed to hold its contents. It has also developed that magical patina that only daily use and the passing of time can bring about authentically. This large historic example would be ideal as a decorative display piece, perfect to add some southern Italian farmhouse charm to any home, indoors or out.

Found in Cosenza

a provincial capital of Calabria, known for its untouched medieval historic center.

Dimensions: H68cm x W47cm x D47cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration.
