XL Antique Scalloped Edge Platter – Grottaglie, Puglia

€250.00

A striking mid-19th-century antique Puglian ceramic platter from Grottaglie, featuring a gently scalloped edge and a soft buttermilk-coloured glaze. Hand thrown and beautifully simple in form, this exceptionally large piece is a wonderful example of traditional Southern Italian rustic pottery.

The warm ivory glaze is characteristic of robba bianca, the fine white-glazed pottery associated with Grottaglie and the wider Puglian ceramic tradition. Traditionally produced using a pewter glaze and fired twice, robba bianca was considered among the finest and most valuable forms of rural Puglian ceramics.

Originally made for everyday family meals, large communal plates such as this would traditionally have been shared by the whole family at the table. Its beautifully aged surface and authentic rustic patina reveal the marks of generations of use and the passage of time.

Found in Martina Franca in the Valle d'Itria, this one-of-a-kind antique platter makes a striking addition to a kitchen, dining table or console, bringing the understated character of historic Puglian farmhouse pottery to a contemporary interior.
